The Gods Must Be Crazy

The Gods Must Be Crazy is a movie made in 1980, so it’s older than every current Avon Laker except Dave and I. This is an absolute must see. I laughed hard a lot and I would consider this one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. There is nothing crude or obnoxious about it, and today (January 25th 2008) is the first time I’ve ever seen it. So what is this movie about that the Gods must be crazy? A Kalahari bushman finds a Coke bottle, thrown from a passing plane, in the middle of the desert, which he believes is a gift from the gods. The “gift” proves to be more of a curse than a blessing when the tribesmen begin to fight over it and eventually use it as a weapon. They decide they have to get rid of the bottle to keep the peace in the village and they must find the end of the earth and throw it back to the Gods. The thing about the Kalahari bushmen is they don’t know anything of technology, war, cars, basically anything we consider property, and have never seen a white person before. So this Kalahari bushman played by N!xau (the exclamation point represents a click) leaves his tribe on his quest to get rid of the bottle. There’s a lot of slapstick comedy and three separate stories that take place. N!xau and the coke bottle bring them all together.

It’s amazing how a simple object such as a coke bottle can be considered amazing to other people who have never seen one. It shows how we can generally take most things we have for granted. If you give this movie a chance you will definitely be rewarded in a big way…laughs!!! The one thing I do think you need to do is watch this movie with a group of people, don’t watch it by yourself, sounds crazy, but do it.
